How to make Festive Filipino Parol StarS
Introducing the Parol star
This kit is inspired by a traditional Filipino Christmas decoration, the Parol (meaning lantern) Star. I discovered it whilst watching an advert for Disney+ this year. If you’ve not seen it, check it out here. I wanted to create a version that you could easily make at home, without a ready supply of bamboo! The Parol is a traditional part of the Panunulúyan pageant in the nine-day Christmas procession during the Spanish colonial period of the Philippines. It was initially rectangular or oblong in shape and was made with white paper, but eventually came to be made in various shapes and colours. It became a five-pointed star (symbolizing the Star of Bethlehem) during the American colonial period. It remains an iconic symbol of Filipino Christmas.
TOP TIPS
This kit makes two - This kit makes two Parol Stars. Separate the sticks into separate piles. You should have one extra spare stick for filling any gaps.
Make sure each star fits the template - Be careful with this as if stars are different sizes, they won’t stick together.
Weigh down to dry - Find something heavy to weigh everything down whilst drying. It will make your star much stronger.
Don’t use a candle! - This lantern is not at all fire proof. Please use an LED candle, not a real one!
