Circular loom weaving guide

Loom weaving craft kits

Introduction to circular loom weaving

I’ve fallen in love with this craft. I think, so far, if I had to pick my desert island craft, it’d be this one. The kit is simple but incredible quality. The super chunky merino wool is lovely yo work with as it’s so soft. I love the way that, especially the mustard yarn catches the light and turns almost golden.

Check out the blog for more information about this craft and the story behind how I discovered it.

TOP TIPS

  • Get your warp really tight - when you wrap the cotton warp round the hoop, make sure it’s super tight. It will make your life much easier!

  • Make sure you have an odd number of spokes - In the guide I suggest 25 but the main think is that you have an odd number so your pattern alternates as you loop round.

  • Enjoy how the wool feels - merino wool is such an awesome material. Make sure you stop to enjoy it.

  • Keep checking your design - Make sure that you check how your weaving is going regularly. It’s really annoying to have to go several steps back because you missed one spoke.

  • Get creative! - It’s nice to start the weave just like I have by keeping the middle tight and neat but as you circle outwards, just go for it. If you go wrong or don’t like your design, pull the wool out and try something else. It’s a really forgiving craft!

Plan your craft

Total make time - 1-2 hours

  1. Make a web of cotton warp to weave into.

  2. Weave a tight centre circle.

  3. Weave more loosely as you move out from the centre.

    Start to add woolly roving

  4. Finish with roving round the outside.

Video Guide

It’s quite a long guide this time! I’d take an evening for each part and craft along with the video. Note the glue tin shown in the video is now a glass jar.
