avocado tie dye
This one really has to be seen to be believed! It’s just magic to watch your avocado stones turn water into a deep red wine colour. This guide takes you through how to make your own dye from avocado stones (provided) and how to use them to make awesome tie and dip dyed t-shirts and mini tote bags. This craft truly is to umm…dye for!
I love tie dye and it’s having a massive resurgence in popularity this year. I’ve been researching commercial dyes for a while and can’t find any that I’m happy with. They’re mostly really highly toxic, dreadful for the fish and come in single use plastic. I’ve also seen lots of tie dye done with loads of squeezy plastic bottles. Nope that’s not for me. This kit is something totally different. I couldn’t have made this kit without support and information from two awesome people. @_dinosaurvintage_ and @rebeccadesnos on Instagram. Please go check them out! Dinosaur vintage are all about tie dyed and up-cycled clothes. Rebecca is an expert in natural dyes and have some brilliant books you have to read if you love this craft!
There is a fair bit of waiting around to do with this craft. So make yourself a cup of tea and settle in!

TOP TIPS
Be careful! - Dye baths are hot! Always be careful with hot liquids.
Take your time - The longer you leave things the better the results. You can’t really overdo timings. Just don’t leave any tie dye in the dye bath for too long or you’ll lose your pattern.
Tie tight - Compared to usual tie dying the fabric is left in the dye for longer. Tie your elastic bands tight for a sharper pattern.
Watch out for bits - If any bits of avocado stone escape from the bag make sure your remove them. If they stick to your fabric it will leave a brown spot.
Care for your creations - Avocado dye is colourfast so can be washed at 30c or less in a washing machine. Dye can fade faster if left in the sun for long periods. Treat your dyed fabric gently and the colour will last.
